Nature Experience Center Elbe Animal Park Hebelei

At a glance

The Elbepark Hebelei Nature Experience Center is located in the picturesque valley of the Elbe River in the municipality of Diera-Zehren (Meißen County), directly on the Elbe Cycle Path.

Since its founding in 1972, domestic animals threatened with extinction have been kept and bred here.Especially through the breeding of skudds, the NEH has been able to make an important contribution to the preservation of this small sheep from the Baltic region. At present, about 200 animals of 67 different breeds and species live in the park.

Besides the Skudden, Hungarian Zackel sheep, Scottish Highland cattle, domestic donkeys and miniature pigs also have a home here. There is also a spiny mouse house and peacocks to watch.

For our younger guests, a playground and a petting enclosure with a slide are always a special experience. Furthermore there is a biotope where you can discover water inhabitants. On the Elbe, with a little luck, mallards, gray herons and cormorants can be observed.

Since 1996 there have been farmers' markets in the Hebelei. These have proved so popular that they are held between 8 times a year. Here you can buy delicious and fresh produce from direct marketers. From cheese, eggs, honey to real water buffalo sausage.

Currently, a lot is changing in the NEH, so the visitor service will be improved, some new animal species and breeds will move into the park and interactive nature experience games will be created. For your physical well-being, the snack pavilion "Zum Elbradler" is accessible to hungry and thirsty cyclists, hikers and zoo guests even without having to visit the NEH.
