Dresden Elbland 2018. Highlights galore

Exceptional events, very special jubilees and popular classics wherever you look. Whether it is the elegance of the 13th SemperOpernball and the 10th Dresdner Schlössernacht (Dresden’s Night of the Palaces) or the exuberant Dresdner Stadtfest (Dresden city festival) and the numerous festivals in the Elbe River valley: with such a wonderful selection of events and Dresden Elbland’s characteristically unique array of cultural highlights, 2018 has something for everyone and for you too.

Tips

  • Enjoy a spirited start to the New Year on 26 January at the 13th SemperOpernball. It’s a fabulous fest that Stefan Herrmann, the star cook who runs the “bean&beluga” restaurant which has been awarded a Michelin star, is eagerly awaiting: “I am really looking forward to the SemperOpernball. Together with my team I will be offering culinary delights to 1,600 guests from around the world.” And he is not the only important contributor: there are many enthusiastic helpers, such as the hairdressers from the salon “Suchomel Bohm” or the chauffeur services of the eGolf fleet from Volkswagen’s “Gläserne Manufaktur” (The Transparent Factory) who all come together to make the SemperOpernball a wonderfully unique event. And if you do not want to dance inside the opera house, you are warmly invited to come to the SemperOpenairball at Theaterplatz, where you can watch and dance as the SemperOpernball is being broadcast live to the square in front of the opera.

  • Jubilees and really special open-air events are there for you to enjoy in Dresden in 2018. The 30th Filmfest Dresden, from 17 to 22 April, will be showing moving and inspiring short films from around the world. Special highlights are the films in the competition for best national and best international short film. Night owls and cultural aficionados will love the 20th Museumsnacht Dresden (Dresden Night of Museums) on 30 June when the museums and exhibitions in the city open their doors from 6 pm until 1 am. Dresdner Schlössernacht (Dresden’s Night of the Palaces) is celebrating its 10th anniversary on 21 July, inviting you to come and enjoy an exciting programme in front of the picturesque backdrop of the three Elbe palaces. CANALETTO – the Dresden city festival, is celebrating its 20th anniversary from 17 to 19 August, transforming the state capital into one giant festival site. Germany’s largest city festival invites you to come and celebrate with us and delight in the musicals and shows being presented in nine different stages.

  • Savour the beauty of mild summer nights along the Elbe River: the Neuen Burgfestspiele Meissen (“New Castle Festival Meissen”) will be presenting concerts and plays in the magical ambience of Meißen Castle from 17 to 30 June. A special highlight to watch out for: the concert with the “Dresdner Kreuzchor” on 24 June, set against the historical backdrop of the Albrechtsburg Meißen, the oldest castle in Germany. Cinema and music lovers can look forward to the Filmnächte am Elbufer (open-air film nights on the banks of the Elbe River) with a multifaceted programme that runs from 28 June to 26 August. Come and experience open-air events and cinematic highlights set against the truly unique backdrop of the silhouette of the Historic Old Town. And for that real summer festival feeling, come to the 28th Elbhangfest which turns the Elbe River valley into one large festival all the way from Loschwitz to Pillnitz. A wide-ranging selection of events from concerts and dance to readings, exhibitions of master craftsmanship and culinary delights will enthral visitors of all ages.

  • Music has a long tradition in Dresden. From 10 May to 10 June 2018 the 41st Dresdner Musikfestspiele (Dresden Music Festival) will captivate classical music fans from around the world. Under the motto “Mirrors” top-class national and international artists will be coming together to play chamber music, orchestral works and virtuoso solo performances in over 20 different venues. If you are more into swing and groove, then we can give a great start to your summer with the 48th International Dixieland Festival from 13 to 20 May 2018. A whole bouquet of events at various locations, together with the big Dixieland-Parade, get the whole city swinging.
