Kraftwerk Mitte Dresden is a former power station in the centre of the city. This imposing industrial monument from the 19th century has now been transformed into an amazing complex for the arts, for entertainment and for the creative sector. With its prime location, fascinating architecture and innovative concept, Kraftwerk Mitte Dresden is rapidly becoming a hive of activity. The Dresden State Operetta and tjg (theater junge generation) celebrated their official opening on 16th December 2016 and have since been playing to packed audiences. The complex also offers venues for major events, rehearsal facilities for the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music and a new Museum of Energy, as well as restaurants and cafes. In addition, there are modern offices, studios and exhibition spaces available at attractive rents.
In the beginning: In 1839, the Zweite Dresdner Gasanstalt (i.e. the city’s second gasworks) began using the site on Wettiner Platz.
The first 100 years: Power was generated for Dresden here until 1994.
The concept: How about making intelligent use of the distinctive 39,000m2 industrial complex with its listed buildings?
Implementation of the scheme: Dresden invested €120 million in the project via city-owned enterprises.
The future: It will be exciting. Besides dance venues, restaurants and a museum, various new experiences are in the offing.
